As a hard-core Luc Besson fan, I’m really looking forward to this movie. I generally eschew movie reviews until after I’ve seen the film, but I started reading A.O. Scott’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in the NYT and came across this paragraph:
To say that “Valerian” is a science-fiction epic doesn’t quite do it justice. Imagine crushing a DVD of “The Phantom Menace” into a fine powder, tossing in some Adderall and Ecstasy and a pinch of cayenne pepper and snorting the resulting mixture while wearing a virtual reality helmet in a Las Vegas karaoke bar. Actually, that sounds like too much fun, but you get the idea.
Scott says that like it’s a bad thing. Sounds pretty friggin’ awesome to me.
I’ll finish reading the review after I see the movie.

The tagline bothers me so much. ‘City of a thousand planets’. How can one city span multiple planets? Are the connected via tubes? What the hell kind of structure would be needed to hold 1000 planets together? Wouldn’t it be easier to just have a thousand cities on each planet instead and use space travel to get to/from all of them? I know the movie might not actually be about or have a city that is also a thousand planets, but my jimmies are still rustled by it!

I think it is one city on one planet that hosts beings from 1000 planets. Or something like that. I’m not familiar with the source material, and I’m trying very hard to see it with a completely open mind.

Saw it last night. If you liked 5th Element, you’ll like this one. All it’s missing is Bruce Willis.
Super fun and imaginative movie. This review gets it: http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/valerian-and-the-city-of-a-thousand-planets-2017

Wife mentioned she was interested in seeing Valarian. I thought the trailer looked good. I made the mistake of reading a negative review, and now am not very interested in seeing it. My wife HATES it when this happens.

Go see it anyway. Screw the reviews. For context, here is a story:
Two critics were sitting on a bench next to a lake. They watched a man row a boat out to the middle of the lake and then stand up in the boat. Then the man stepped out of the boat and walked across the surface of the water back to shore. One critic turned to the other and said, “Look at that; he can’t even swim.”

It better be a 1000 body Klemperer rosette encased in a Dyson shell

Multinational city with space for everyone.

I saw it last night. It’s pretty much what you describe. It’s a space station that initially welcomes all walks of life, and for centuries grows into a huge city with thousands of lifeforms coexisting.

You would be correct. Saw it, OK movie. Way too violent for kiddos.
